ART QUILT TITLED: Fritillaria Fulcrum, - A one-of-a-kind Fiber Art Quilt by KAREN HAMPTON
DESCRIPTION: Fritillaria Fulcrum: A one-of-a-kind fiber art quilt by Karen Hampton. This bobbin-drawn piece, featuring heavy thread, hand appliqué, trapunto, and machine quilting, was inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement and Marie Webster.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Marie used Appliqué as a key design element in her quilts, along with symmetrical balance, where the appliqué design elements radiate out and are arranged evenly around a central point. Marie also based many of her quilts on individual flowers. Using these three design elements created an asymmetrically balanced, geometric, and streamlined contemporary composition that pivots around a central fulcrum. The simplicity and elegance of the design, the quality of craftsmanship, and the naturalistic style honor all the Arts and Crafts reformers and their core belief, “art for life’s sake.” MATERIALS: Heavy Pearl Crown Rayon thread for bobbin work, commercial-grade cotton, hand-dyed silk fabrics, cotton batting, and silk thread for quilting.
