Resist-dyed cotton and hand-dyed cottons. Machine quilted with silk thread. Hobbs Heirloom fusible cotton batting.

ART QUILT TITLED: The Joy it Brings, CREATED by Karen Hampton 2015 SIZE: 32” x 41 ½” Artist’s Statement: Inspired by Marie Webster’s White Dogwood and Pink Dogwood quilts and the Arts & Crafts Movement. Techniques: Double outline sewing with heavy thread, hand appliqué, and machine quilting. Materials: Hand dyed cottons, surface designed background fabric enhanced with fabric paint and silkscreened designs, heavy wool thread, cotton batting, and silk thread quilting.

WHOLE CLOTH SHIBORI TITLED: Symmetry CREATED by Karen Hampton SIZE: 43 ½” x 56” There are many happy accidents when dyeing fabric. Using cold snow with the dye allows different dye particles to strike at different rates to produce many separated colors from just two original dye colors — yellow and purple. Original whole cloth shibori snow-dyed onto heavy white silk habotai.

ART QUILT TITLED: Microscopic,CREATED: by Karen Hampton SIZE: 31 ½” x 34” The detailed patterns that was originally produced with a hot glue gun remind me of the microscopic images in petri dishes. Original whole cloth design silkscreened onto white silk charmeuse using dried thickened fiber reactive dyes on a blank silkscreen, graphic stick rubbings and caron de gausch accents. Cotton batting and free motion silk thread quilting overall with trapunto accents.
